The first of our Pemiscot County newspapers have been digitized and are being added to our library’s website in the “Online Resources” tab. This project was supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State. An LSTA Digital Imaging grant was applied for by Caruthersville Public Library and supported with letters by several community residents.
The papers currently online are:
The Critic (from 1/1/1915 – 5/7/1915) Hayti, MO newspaper
The Gayoso Democrat (from 11/6/1891-12/25/1891) Gayoso, MO newspaper
The Pemiscot Argus (from 1907-1921) Caruthersville, MO newspaper
The Democrat-Argus and the Twice-a-week Democrat (from 1/26/1900 – 12/29/1966)
The Hayti Herald is digitized from 1908-1922 and is freely available on the Library of Congress’s website, Chronicling America. This paper was digitized as part of a national grant in 2008-2010.
Other more recent years of the Hayti Herald are currently being digitized, as well as editions of the Steele Enterprise. These will be online later next year.
The Democrat-Argus from 1892-1966 should be delivered on Tuesday and we will get it on the website as soon as possible.
To easily read parts of these newspapers, look for the small newspaper icon in the upper left and click onto various portions of the newspaper page to read it more easily.
Other more recent years of the Hayti Herald are currently being digitized through a second digitization grant, as well as editions of the Steele Enterprise. These will be online later next year.
Thanks to all who helped with this project and for those who have been waiting in anticipation to read these old newspapers – Enjoy!!!
