Many of our patrons never come into the library because they borrow all of their materials through our online platform – MOLib2Go, powered by Overdrive. A great improvement for our online service is that now, you will never have to worry about being deep on a waiting list for materials because Caruthersville Public Library is an Overdrive Advantage customer, and on the 10th of every month, our patrons will move to the front of the line before the rest of the consortium has access to the materials. Then, when our patrons have finished they will be shared with the rest of MOLib2Go. This will be quite an improvement for those of you who have been disappointed with holds that never seem to deliver. Place them before the 10th of every month and you will be moved into the first spots.

Find our library and then use your Caruthersville Public Library card number to log in. Once your account is active, you can download materials to your computer or phone, or to eReaders. Ask at the circulation desk for instructions for the various devices.
Missouri Department of Conservation Photograph Collection now available for viewing
A new collection from the Missouri State Archives is now available through Missouri Digital Heritage. The Missouri Department of Conservation Photograph Collection includes thousands of images taken by Missouri Department of Conservation staff from 1903 to 1995. Topics include plants, wildlife, hunting, fishing, landscapes and department events and staff. The collection also includes a series of photographs donated to the department by the Missouri Outdoor Writers Association.

Pemiscot County newspapers now online
The first of our Pemiscot County newspapers have been digitized and are being added to our library’s website in the “Online Resources” tab. This project was supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State. An LSTA Digital Imaging grant was applied for by Caruthersville Public Library and supported with letters by several community residents.
The papers currently online are:
The Critic (from 1/1/1915 – 5/7/1915) Hayti, MO newspaper
The Gayoso Democrat (from 11/6/1891-12/25/1891) Gayoso, MO newspaper
The Pemiscot Argus (from 1907-1921) Caruthersville, MO newspaper
The Democrat-Argus and the Twice-a-week Democrat (from 1/26/1900 – 12/29/1966)
The Hayti Herald is digitized from 1908-1922 and is freely available on the Library of Congress’s website, Chronicling America. This paper was digitized as part of a national grant in 2008-2010.
Other more recent years of the Hayti Herald are currently being digitized, as well as editions of the Steele Enterprise. These will be online later next year.
The Democrat-Argus from 1892-1966 should be delivered on Tuesday and we will get it on the website as soon as possible.

“The Great Caruthersville Read” contest through July 26th
As part of our Summer Reading program this year, we will choose a “Great Caruthersville Read”, taken from the PBS “Great American Read” contest. Either print and check the ballot here or post your votes. We will tally them after each vote and let you know how books are doing in the contest. As part of the conclusion of summer reading on July 26th, we will announce which book was the champion. (Vote for as many books as you like in this beginning round. We will narrow it down with each upcoming vote until we arrive at a winner.) Ballots are available at the circulation desk at Caruthersville Public Library, as well as on our social media, and in the local newspaper. It will be fun to take part and choose THE book for our community!
Libraries Rock!!! – Summer Reading program
The annual Summer Reading Program at Caruthersville Public Library is called “Libraries Rock!”. It will begin on May 29th with sign ups and an ice cream party. Programming will continue for eight weeks throughout the summer.
Tuesdays will be about what makes libraries rock – books and stories, along with musical fun like karaoke, a dance party, and a talent show. Children will receive a different musical toy each week.
Wednesdays will feature a different children’s movie each week, open to all ages.
Thursdays are Crafternoons, with rock painting, paper crafts, and other fun activities.
All days begin at 1:30 p.m., following the Summer Food program, which will again be served at the John VanAusdall Reading Pavilion at the rear of the library.
Open to all children in Grades K-6 in Pemiscot County, but tweens, teens, and adults can still sign up for our summer reading challenge and join in on the fun.

Bookgroup Selections for May 2018
The Caruthersville Area Arts Council bookgroup is currently reading “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood as their May selection. They will meet on May 24th at 11 a.m. This group always elicits interesting discussions about a wealth of topics – not always associated with the book that was read. All are welcomed by this friendly group.
Bootheel Bookworms, led by Nikki Riggs, has chosen “The Husband Hour” by Jamie Brenner as the book for May. This group has no meetings and no questions to answer – just pure reading pleasure. Grab a copy and join in!
PCHS Historic Pictures on Tuesdays at 1:30
The Pemiscot County Historical Society, in conjunction with Caruthersville Public Library, is offering resident’s time to help identify historic photographs. These are pictures that have been given to the historical society or acquired in other ways but they need identification. On Tuesday afternoons at 1:30, citizens can sit down with the pictures and see if there are people or places they can identify.
This should be a fun time of looking at photographs with friends so please make plans to be there!
